Still on my blogging break, but just had to share this story with you.
The way technology makes decisions for you annoys me. For example, I can't drive my car unless I am wearing the seat belt. This is annoying if I've parked, undone the seat belt, and then decide I'd like to edge forward another inch or two. The car just won't move, unless I buckle up again.
Another example: my phone automatically uploaded all my google contacts, even though I never asked it to. This is rubbish, because it means that I have a large number of contacts, whereas I only use the phone for calls and texts to people in my immediate life. (No, I'm not boasting about that number of contacts; it's just that the phone has uploaded anyone, everyone, who's ever sent me an email to which I've replied - or that's what it seems like).
Thus it was, dear Bloggy Friends, that one of my Bloggy Friends who lives in Chicago received a short burst of texts from me today:
"How about john n natasha? freya in poppy's class"
"McNabs? two daughters and know the andersons. u like peter who talks to u after chapel. wrights? john and roger wld get on"
"So how about smithsons collingwoods andersons and wrights?"
Poor Expat Mum was a little confused, until the final one shed just a little light:
"cld u find out when guest night is and if too late to take 6 or 8 places"
and she realised that it was me, trying to text my husband, whose name (without giving away any anonymity here) might mean that he is next to her in my contacts list.
Oh, and while we're on the subject of annoying technology, what about spell-checkers? In an email chat with another Bloggy Friend this afternoon, I was amused when she told me that having her sons at different schools worked out ok, "but it's a piano when it comes to pickup".

The sight of me trying to work out what you could possibly mean - had I forgotten to do something we'd agreed on? Was I having a senior moment, not recognizing all the names in the text? Pathetic really. LOL
ReplyDeleteI've given up trying to leave blog comments using my phone after checking back and realising my spellchecker had left some very bizarre comments! Not quite sure how a spellchecker manages to write some made-up words!
ReplyDeleteHilarious about Expat Mum, and for all those who are wondering, I meant pain. Although piano certainly makes it sound as if I've adopted some kind of Cockney rhyming slang after 4 weeks in London....
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought about Cockney rhyming slang! Yes, it does sound like that.
DeleteHa! I am now going to automatically (autocorrect?) think 'piano' when I say 'pain'.
DeleteMy phone initially did that as well - you can undo it and then change the settings (though it might take a four year degree to figure it out). I almost wish there were two contact lists - one for phone numbers and one for emails. Because now that I only have people I call on my phone, I can't actually email anyone whose email address I haven't added to my phone - if that makes any sense. Anyway, this is a long way of saying I can relate! Glad you came out of blogger hibernation to share.
ReplyDeleteI don't own a mobile phone so escape all that annoyance. :-)
ReplyDeleteUgh! My phone has done that with contacts as well and it drives me crazy.
ReplyDeleteYou must have the new IOS 7 iPhone update, because it's ruined my life (at least, from an email and texting point of view.) Even worse when I forget to change the autocorrect language from German to English (or vice versa) and discover halfway through that my text is gobbledygook.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on ALL of this. I even have an annoying fridge that bleeps when left open for 30 seconds which isn't long enough TO PUT MY SHOPPING AWAY! :)
